Just when I thought we all understood that incandescent bulbs aren’t okay, along came the Industrial Lighting trend. You know that joke “How many ___ does it take to screw in a light bulb?” I feel like, if you think using incandescent bulbs makes any sense at all, you should be the subject of this joke. Obviously the traditional filament bulb is way cooler looking with the industrial style, but when 25% of your home energy bill comes from your electricity use, you have to rethink your style choices. The average LED light bulb lasts 40,000 hrs, compared to the average incandescent bulb which lasts just 3,000 hours. I’ve been looking for a lot of lighting fixtures for our new home, and I stocked up on all the LED and CFL bulbs we’ll need for the present and future. I have to remind myself that its these small choices that make the most significant impact on our lives.
If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves. Thomas Edison

Where Old Bulbs Go To Die
Incandescents and LEDs: There are very few official places that will accept Incandescent or LED bulbs for recycling. Check your local town website to find out what you should do
CFLs: In many states, it is actually illegal to throw CFLs out with your regular trash, so make sure they are recycled properly. Home Depot and IKEA have take-back programs for CFLs,cities and counties often have recycling centers where you can take used CFL bulbs. Call your town or check Earth911.com to find a recycling program near you. If you’re feeling extra-ambitious, you can also order a CFL recycling kit from www.lightbulbrecycling.com. CFLs should be handled with care–if a bulb breaks avoid exposure to the trace amounts of mercury inside. The EPA recommends clearing children and pets out of the room, and airing out the room for at least 15 minutes. Pick up the glass using a towel or sticky tape. Wipe the area with a damp towel, and seal the towel or tape in a glass jar or plastic bag before disposal. Or you can just use an LED and not worry about it dying for forty years.
